Last full day at camp!
This morning we were blessed to wake up to beautiful weather after a rainy night! At breakfast, we ate chocolate muffins, eggs, and bacon and then headed up to the lake where our Sunnysiders led Chapel! There, they spoke about their favorite camp memories, what camp means to them, and their favorite Bible verses while singing worship songs, and they ended by jumping into the Doris to Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
In activities, we baked chocolate waffles in Cooking, continued shooting Balloons in archery, gave the puppies a bath in Paws and so much more! Campers continued to learn in their classes while making the most of their last day here! At lunch today we had Italian subs with some fruit and salad! During rest time today we worked on packing everyone up before running down the hill to get our Trade Po!
We were then blessed with a little rain that later turned into a gorgeous summer afternoon filled with activities! Horseback Riding was able to take trail rides, Backpacking learned how to build a fire, and the lake continued to be filled with fun games in Kayaking and Canoeing!
Some of our girls were able to participate in a rafting trip for their last day at camp!

At dinner tonight we had chicken tenders and mashed potatoes with ice cream sandwiches as our dessert! After eating, we dismissed to our weekly White Feather ceremony where we recognized girls for their achievements in activities, for completing hard challenges, and for their leadership abilities within the cabin! Furthermore, we were able to recognize our Most Outstanding and Most Improved awards for each activity for third session as well as recognize the campers and staff members who have been here at Merri-Mac for the past ten years by awarding them their Founder’s Arrow and “From this Haven” ring (which is a tradition started this summer)! Later, White Feather transitioned into our Final Campfire where we had each cabin share two memories made from these past weeks, and the Sunnysiders showed us their “Shabooga” nicknames for one another before passing out their suns to girls who have made an impact on their camp experience!
As closing is coming closer and closer, we had our own closing Lakeside ceremony tonight where the tribal leaders lit a bonfire on our fire dock in the middle of Doris, and we all came together as a camp to sing songs remembering our time here and awaiting our return to our friends. We have loved having the opportunity to get to know your girls this summer and we are so grateful that you have shared them with us! We cannot wait to see everyone here tomorrow for our final closing ceremony! Thank you again, have safe travels and an amazing good night!

What is White Feather?

More than most camps we know of, Merri-Mac is a camper driven program.  The tribal leaders, honor campers, princess court, Spirits of Good Cheer and Sportsmanship, and even the Princess herself are decided by the campers.  Each of these become opportunities for campers to recognize particular character types and leadership abilities and is an important way of calling to a girl’s attention her own abilities and talents.  

One of the exceptions to this is our Merri-Mac Council where the counselors will award our White Feather promotions.  Here campers who have demonstrated gifts of quiet leadership and an increasing growth in the fruit of the Spirit receive beaded necklaces as they progress through the ranks toward achieving the rank of White Feather.  More important than these promotions, however, are the opportunities Merri-Mac Council provides for recognizing each girl’s unique character and abilities.  Some of our most successful campers, some of our tribal chiefs, and even some of our honor campers may never receive a White Feather promotion because their gifts lie in other areas.  But White Feather is an opportunity to recognize certain character traits that might otherwise go unnoticed.

In the end the most important part of Merri-Mac Council comes after the ceremony is over.  During cabin time on the evenings that we hold council the counselors will go to each camper to describe the gifts and abilities that they have noticed in her.  This is where a girl who may never earn a White Feather Promotion, or a Gold Bar, or be elected to a tribal office, can be told about her own unique gifts and contribution to her camp family.
